The Kinks - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman - full length

Another of my favorites from the Kinks. What a marvelous songwriter Ray Davies is! Lyrics for this song are below.

Lyrics:

Woke up this morning, started to sneeze
I had a cigarette and a cup of tea
I looked in the mirror, what did I see
A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees
I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes
I had another sneeze and I blew my nose
I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest
I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed

Surely there must be a way
For me to change the shape I'm in
Dissatisfied with what I am
I want to be a better man

Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman

Woke up this morning, what did I see
A big black cloud hanging over me
I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead
The news was so bad that I fell out of bed
There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a Superman to survive
Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills
I'm such a wreck but I'm staying alive
I'd really like to change the world

And save it from the mess it's in
I'm too weak, I'm so thin
I'd like to fly but I can't even swim

Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman

I look in the paper what do I see
Robbery, violence, insanity
Hey girl we've got to get out of this place
There's got to be something better than this
I need you, but I hate to see you this way
If I were Superman then I'd fly you away

Superman Superman I want to be like Superman

Wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman

VICTORIA / THE KINKS

"Long ago life was clean. Sex was bad and obscene.... Victoria ... was our Queen."

One of my very favorite Kinks songs. More obscure than it deserves to be. From the 1969 album "Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)". I like the bite in the lyrics (see below).

Lyrics:

Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the Lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

I was born, lucky me

In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
Let her sun never set
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, toria

Land of hope and gloria

Land of my Victoria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

Canada to India

Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967)

Great Aretha - her first hit song. Unhealthy love, but great song. Spooner Oldham doing that really simple but haunting opening riff. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

The story of the recording ...

Here's a 1967 live performance -

Baron Von Tollbooth / Flowers of the Night

Kitt Cox shared this link.
This is a great sound. Glad to be reminded, Kitt Cox.
Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun is an album by Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, and David Freiberg from Jefferson Airplane. The album was released at the same time as Thirty Seconds Over Winterland. All the members of Jefferson Airplane make an appearance on the album, but on most of the tracks Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead performs lead guitar and Chris Ethridge of the Flying Burrito Brothers performs bass.

Jerry Butler "I'm A Telling You" (1961)

[with Curtis Mayfield and the original Impressions, a group Mayfield and Butler co-founded]

This has been one of my Jerry Butler favorites since back when it came out and I was listening to it on the radio in Norfolk, VA.

Jerry Butler - "Make It Easy On Yourself" (1962)

Any chance Bill Medley (Righteous Brothers) was trying to get this excellent deep Jerry Butler timbre in his singing?

JERRY BUTLER "Find Another Girl" (1960)

More Jerry Butler - one of the greatest.

"He Will Break Your Heart" (1960)
"For Your Precious Love" (1958)

The Velvet Underground - I'm Waiting For The Man

26 dollars in my hand.
Listen to this, and then to Bowie's Heroes. Basically, the same instrumental backing behind the main verses, no?

The Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane

Earlier version of Sweet Jane - and not bad either. Some might say the best. So, after you listen to this, maybe it'll be time to spend some time waiting for your man. 26 dollars in your hand.

Lou Reed - Sweet Jane

Still my favorite version of this song - especially the great instrumental intro.

The one with Metallica (below) is excellent, but I still like the one (above) from the Rock N Roll Animal album better.

Beacon Street Union 01 Recitation / My Love Is

The Eyes of the Beacon Street Union (1968) was a very good first album by this group, a couple of whom I knew as college classmates before they dropped out to devote themselves full time to the band.

The first cut is a very portentous sounding recitation - which I wrote and producer Tom Wilson read - followed by the song "My Love Is."

The recitation was intended to be spooky sounding drivel that put a knock on the burgeoning San Francisco music scene - flower power and all that. It might be the worst horseshit I ever wrote.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb w. VIDEO ANIMATION

Hello. (hello). Is there anybody in there?

I like the video animation that goes along with this.
