Jorma Kaukonen - What Are They Doing In Heaven Today

When I posted versions of this song earlier, I forgot about this one by Jorma Kaukonen, which is still probably my favorite.

What Are They Doing In Heaven Today?

This is a beautiful version of the gospel classic "What Are They Doing In Heaven Today?" It was used in a recent episode of the AMC series "Hell On Wheels" (drama series set in context of building the transcontinental railroads in the post-Civil War era in the 1800's).

Here is a more traditional gospel sound of the same song from Mavis Staples.

And finally, an earlier version in a more traditional Southern Gospel style by the Dixie Hummingbirds.

Baby Don't You Do It (Don't You Break My Heart) - 3 Versions

This is Track 11 of the Who's album - Who's next. A stage favourite of The Who from the 1964/65 era, this Marvin Gaye classic was perhaps and unusual choice ...

Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care

This group was wonderful during its short swing through our space-time. What a great pleasure it is to hear Roy Orbison's smooth voice and range on this one -- "I'm so tired of being lonely. I still have some love to give. Won't you show me that you really care?" Perfect Orbison lyrics. But really they all are great. Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne. Talk about a supergroup!

High Heeled Sneakers -- Rolling Stones -- Leon Russell

"Put on your high heel sneakers. Wear your wig hat on your head."

This song was written and originally performed by Robert Higginbotham using the performance name Tommy Tucker in 1963-64, and went to number one on the Cash Box R&B Locations chart and number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100The Rolling Stones recorded it for BBC in 1964. I couldn't find it in the album discography for the early Stones.

Leon Russell performed it on the TV show Shindig in 1964.

Yes, the same Leon Russell who looks like this nowadays (from last year, 2011, his induction to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

    Iggy Pop - Repo Man

First video is the theme song of the film "Repo Man" (1984) by Iggy Pop. Second video is the "Repo Code" scene, featuring Harry Dean Stanton as the "repo man" (also did great job as Fundamentalist LDS sect leader Roman Grant in HBO series "Big Love").

"Repo Man" (the 1984 original, not to be confused with "Repo MEn," which came out in 2010) is one of those odd and more or less obscure films that are among my favorites.

    Others in no particular order:

"The Man Who Fell To Earth" (1976) (David Bowie)
"Deathrace 2000" (1975)(John Carradine, S. Stallone in an early part before he broke out as a star)
    "Performance" (1968) (Mick Jagger)
"How I Won The War" (1967) (John Lennon)
"Freeway" (1996) (Kiefer Sutherland, R. Witherspoon in one of her early roles before she became big-time)

Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs - Wooly Bully [HD video / Very Good picture ...

1965 - the year I turned 18, graduated from high school, started college, worked for a moving company in Kew West, FL for the first month of Summer vacation, traveled in Europe for the second month.

It was very weird, traveling in Europe that Summer of 1965, to find that I heard "Wooly Bully" playing every place young people congregated. Then, when I flew in to JFK coming home, the first thing I saw on the TV news - reports of the Watts riots in LA.

Crosby Stills Nash - Southern Cross

I love this song (and of course many others, you already know if you follow my music posts at all). CS&N (and Y when he's with them) are/were a great group, one of my favorites, excellent vocal mix. Blah, blah. Time to quiet down, Bob, and listen.

    Harvey Mandel- Christo Redentor

via Kitt Cox. Awesome. Haven't listened to this in ages. Have it on vinyl somewhere. Must share.

BTW - below is a pic of Cristo Redentor statute on Corcovado Mtn. overlooking Rio De Janeiro. Such a beautiful and interesting place. Was there in early 1960's on a family trip (I was maybe 15) - when Ipanema was new and Leblon was not built up at all.

Lovin Spoonful You Didn't Have To Be So Nice

Maybe a little "schmaltzy" for today's sensibilities, but a pretty good and fun band in its day and in its way.

    The Rolling Stones-Claudine

Shared from Kitt Cox. "He had it coming." She gave Spider some of that "old razzle dazzle." Why is this making me think of the musical "Chicago?"

    Jimi Hendrix - Pali Gap

Version of this music from Kitt Cox --

Another version that I came across -- same music, same performance, but different video -- shows Hendrix playing, which is always a pleasure to see for those of us who have played a little guitar, perhaps an envious pleasure but a pleasure nevertheless --

Carlos Santana and John Mclaughlin Live - Flame Sky 1

At certain times, pretty often, I need a taste of this kind of soaring divine music to keep me going with some measure of sanity. It's funny, because I know plenty of people who say this kind of music drives them insane. There is no wrong to this. Reflect. Breathe. Let go. Aladdin Sane, said Bowie.

Grateful Dead - Deep Elem Blues (acoustic)

Everyone who thinks of the Grateful Dead (long may they live in our hearts and minds, Insha'Allah) only in terms of goofy "deadheads," drugs and their radio hits ("Touch of Grey," "Casey Jones" ["high on cocaine"]), has missed almost the entire experience and the entire point -- MUSIC -- American roots music, especially. There is also, of course, the original free-wheeling jazzy and improvisational stuff. But I have always had a special fondness for their blues, country and folk stuff, both arrangements of traditional archival material and original compositions.

This Is It - Black Or White Cut - Michael Jackson & Orianthi

Today I am thankful for all the music in the world, especially all the music I love, and I am thankful that we had Michael Jackson passing through.

This video is another one of Michael Jackson rehearsing for the "This Is It" tour with Orianthi playing lead guitar. Damn, she is good! And the other thing - no matter how strange you may think Michael had become - this shows a guy in rehearsal in full command of his faculties and gifts.

    Three From Orianthi

This lady rips it. The Crossroads 2007 blues segment - she was 22 then. Has played with Steve Vai, Santana, was hired to be lead guitar for the Michael Jackson "This Is It" tour." I believe the "Beat It" rehearsal segment was only a couple of days before MJ's death. I confess, I did not know about Orianthi until I watched the "This Is It" movie on VH1 recently.

The Kinks - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman - full length

Another of my favorites from the Kinks. What a marvelous songwriter Ray Davies is! Lyrics for this song are below.

    Lyrics:

Woke up this morning, started to sneeze
I had a cigarette and a cup of tea
I looked in the mirror, what did I see
A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees
I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes
I had another sneeze and I blew my nose
I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest
I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed

Surely there must be a way
For me to change the shape I'm in
    Dissatisfied with what I am
I want to be a better man

Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman

Woke up this morning, what did I see
A big black cloud hanging over me
I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead
The news was so bad that I fell out of bed
There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a Superman to survive
Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills
I'm such a wreck but I'm staying alive
I'd really like to change the world

And save it from the mess it's in
I'm too weak, I'm so thin
I'd like to fly but I can't even swim

Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman

I look in the paper what do I see
    Robbery, violence, insanity
Hey girl we've got to get out of this place
There's got to be something better than this
I need you, but I hate to see you this way
If I were Superman then I'd fly you away

Superman Superman I want to be like Superman

Wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman

    VICTORIA / THE KINKS

"Long ago life was clean. Sex was bad and obscene.... Victoria ... was our Queen."

One of my very favorite Kinks songs. More obscure than it deserves to be. From the 1969 album "Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)". I like the bite in the lyrics (see below).

    Lyrics:

    Long ago life was clean
    Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
    Stately homes for the Lords
    Croquet lawns, village greens
    Victoria was my queen
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

    I was born, lucky me

In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
    Let her sun never set
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, toria

    Land of hope and gloria

    Land of my Victoria
    Land of hope and gloria
    Land of my Victoria
    Victoria, 'toria
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

    Canada to India

    Australia to Cornwall
    Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From the rich to the poor
    Victoria loved them all
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
    Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
